Communicating New Research on Timor-Leste

Centro Formação João Paulo II, Comoro, Dili, Timor-Leste, 30 June - 1 July 2011



This two-day conference for researchers is organised by the Timor-Leste Studies Association (TLSA). The TLSA an interdisciplinary, international research network focussed on all aspects of research into East Timorese society, including politics and history, economics, communications, health, language and agriculture. The 2011 conference Communicating New Research on Timor-Leste will be co-hosted by the National University of Timor-Lorosa’e, Swinburne University of Technology, and the Technical University of Lisbon.

CALL FOR PAPERS

The organisers now call for papers addressing any aspect of social science/ humanities/ scientific research related to Timor-Leste. The conference organisers welcome papers from academics, researchers, activists, community groups and policy makers. A four-language refereed conference proceedings publication will be published, and distributed free to East Timorese tertiary institutions. Conference sub-themes will include, but are not limited to the following:

ABSTRACT SUBMISSION

Please send all proposals for 20 minutes papers, with a 150-word abstract by 25 March 2011 to:

REGISTRATION

A discount is available for those also attending the Knowledge, Attitudes and Skills for Timor-Leste's Development conference in Dili (4-5 July).

For internationals: All international delegates should submit their completed registration forms by Friday June 10. Internationals can either pre-pay using the registration form, or pay at the registration desk in Dili on June 30. (Write "pay in Dili" at the payment section of the registration form if that is your intention.)

For East Timorese nationals: please register at the registration desk on June 30. You can confirm your attendance before the conference by emailing: Alarico da Costa Ximenes, UNTL. Email: alaricodacosta@rocketmail.com

VENUE, ACCOMMODATION AND TRAVEL


Venue
The TLSA conference will take place at the Centro Formação João Paulo II, Comoro, Dili. Click here to view map.

Transport
A daily bus service to and from the venue will be provided departing from UNTL Liceu Machado building. Click

Please note that the conference bus has a maximum capacity of 22 persons only. Delegates are therefore encouraged to take taxis or microlets to the venue where possible. For those who wish to take the conference bus from downtown Dili, please email:mleach@swin.edu.au directly to secure one of the 22 spots. The bus will leave the square between UNTL Liceu and the Museum of the resistance at 8am on Thursday 30 June, and 8.15 on Friday 1 July. The departure point of the conference bus is also on the map above.

The bus will return to downtown Dili both days at 5.45pm. On Thursday it will head to the Comarca Balide for the book launches, immediately after it reaches UNTL Liceu. Plenty of taxis will also be available from the conference venue.

Taxi ride to and from down-town Dili to the venue will cost approx. $5 but may be negotiated beforehand with the driver.

Conference Reception
The conference reception will be held at the Hotel Esplanada on Wednesday June 29, 6-8pm. All registered delegates welcome.

Visas
For international travellers arriving by air a visa on arrival may be granted valid for stay of up to 30 days, valid for single entry into Timor-Leste. The fee is US$30.

Indonesian nationals may apply on arrival at any border post, including land border crossings as well as Dili International airport and Dili Sea Port.

Portuguese nationals travelling on Portuguese passports are subject to visa exemption arrangements when travelling for tourism.

N.B. Except for Indonesian and Portuguese nationals all travellers arriving at a land border must apply in advance for Visa Application Authorisation.

RELATED EVENTS

The Communicating New Research on Timor-Leste research conference (Dili) will precede the Knowledge, Attitudes and Skills for Timor-Leste's Development conference (Dili), organised by Victoria University and National University of Timor-Lorosa’e, to be held in Dili, at the Dili Convention Centre, Mercado Lama, on Monday and Tuesday 4-5 July 2011. This will be a policy-oriented conference focussing on case studies of good practice, with invited speakers and participation by the Timorese government, the National University, Timorese civil society, Members of Parliament and other interested groups. These are linked conferences and discounted co-registration will be available for those who attend both.

On the weekend between these two conferences (Saturday and Sunday 2-3 July) a number of Expos will take place in Dili with exhibits by local organisations on the conference themes of Agriculture & Rural Livelihoods, Health, Teaching and Learning, Youth Transitions, Financial Inclusion & Trade, Infrastructure & National Systems, and Law & Justice.
